The McIntosh C8 is a tube preamplifier known for its warm and natural sound reproduction. With four 12AX7a vacuum tubes, it delivers the signature McIntosh sound that has been appreciated for generations. Its open chassis and industrial design are reminiscent of the classic MC275 tube amplifier and the MA252 and MA352 integrated amplifiers. <\/p>\n

The C8 features several analog inputs, including balanced and unbalanced options, as well as phono inputs for both Moving Coil and Moving Magnet elements. This makes it possible to connect a variety of audio sources, from turntables to CD players. All inputs can be easily named for user-friendly operation. In addition, there are bass and treble controls to tune the sound to personal preference. <\/p>\n

For those seeking digital connectivity, the C8 is expandable with the optional DA2 Digital Audio Module. This module adds seven digital inputs, including HDMI (ARC), USB and optical inputs, and supports high-resolution audio formats up to DSD512 and DXD 384 kHz. Designed in Binghamton, New York, by McIntosh’s in-house engineering team, it combines retro design with high-end components, such as audiophile-grade tubes, gold-plated connectors and McIntosh’s internal monogrammed heatsinks. McIntosh Laboratory, founded in 1949 by Frank H. McIntosh and Gordon Gow, is located in Binghamton, New York. In 1965, McIntosh amplifiers were used during President Lyndon B. Johnson’s inauguration speech. In 1969, twenty McIntosh MC3500 tube amplifiers provided the sound for the Woodstock festival. In 1974, the Grateful Dead used 48 McIntosh MC2300 amplifiers for their “Wall of Sound” system. In 1990, McIntosh was acquired by Clarion, followed by a takeover by D&M Holdings in 2003.
