Melco was founded in Japan in 1975 by Makoto Maki. In 1980, the company introduced a turntable in the United Kingdom. In 1981, Melco entered the computer peripheral market with an EEPROM writer. The name “Melco” stands for “Maki Engineering Laboratory Company. ‘Buffalo’ is derived from one of the company’s first products, a printer buffer, and also refers to the American bison.
