Magnepan was founded in 1969 by engineer Jim Winey in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, United States. The company is known for its Magneplanar speakers, which use a magnetostatic design with a planar driver mounted in a panel. This design uses thin conductive wires or foils attached to a Mylar film, which is in a magnetic field. When an electrical signal is applied, the Mylar film moves, resulting in sound emitted from both the front and back of the panel. This approach differs from conventional speakers that use cone-shaped drivers in an enclosure. Magnepan has developed several models, including the MG-3.7i, which is known for its specific design features.
