Background Information
The Bryston BDA-3.14 is a high-end DAC/streamer born from a design philosophy centered on precision and musicality. Developed by the Bryston team, known for their expertise in audio engineering, the BDA-3.14 utilizes precise DA conversion and high-quality components to achieve a pure sound reproduction. The chassis is crafted from solid aluminum, and the internal wiring has been carefully designed to minimize signal interference. Bryston manufactures its products in Canada and pays close attention to the selection of materials to ensure optimal performance.
Brand History
Bryston is there for those genes who demand pure and sterile sound. Grant Avenue Studio, founded in 1976 by the Lanois brothers (including Grammy award winner Daniel Lanois) and Bob Doidge, is a recording and mixing facility based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, that also offers mastering and tape transfer services. The hallowed rooms in the stately, remodeled early 1900s Edwardian house on Grant Avenue have hosted countless recording legends such as Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Ian Thomas, U2, Johnny Cash, Los Lobos and countless others. Bob Doidge became the sole owner of the studio in 1985 and calls Hamilton a cultural gem, just southwest of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario. Above the mixing desk in the main Grant Avenue room hangs a pair of JBL 4350 studio reference monitors, a 4-way speaker capable of tremendous detail and output levels. The main monitors are powered by a pair of Bryston 4B amplifiers, including the 41st 4B ever produced by Bryston. IMAGE AMP HERE Built and installed in the late 1970s, this 4B amplifier has been running almost nonstop since it was manufactured 40 years ago, illustrating Bryston’s commitment to superior engineering and production quality. Grant Avenue also uses three of the model 2B amplifiers: one powers nearfield monitors, while the other two 2Bs power the studio’s extensive headphone queues that can effortlessly drive ten or more headphones simultaneously. In the more than 40 years that Grant Avenue has been home to so many iconic artists and sessions, their stable of Bryston electronics, running almost nonstop, has needed one repair. For a recording studio, an amplifier must provide excellent performance and be inherently reliable, says director Bob Doidge. “When we bought the first 4B in the late 1970s, our research showed that these amplifiers would give us the purity of sound we wanted for our studio. After four decades with Bryston, I can’t imagine anything better. The special thing about this manufacturer is that they offer a 20-year warranty on their amplifiers!

Reviews & awards | Bryston BDA-3.14

The Absolute Sound – Steven Stone

: The sound of the Bryston BDA-3.14 is described as very neutral and free of “sonic embellishment”—clear, clean, and featuring Class A solid-state output that adds no warmth or coloration. Even at extremely high volumes, it remains quiet without any noise or distortion.

HiFi-Advice – Christiaan Punter

: In this review, the sound is described as very balanced and complete—nothing stands out, nothing is missing—with strong resolution, natural timbre, lively dynamics, and an absence of harshness. There is, however, a subtle smoothness present, which prevents the sound from sounding dry.

Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity – John E. Johnson Jr.

: Streaming via Qobuz was perceived as equivalent to playback from a hard drive; the bitstream is very well reclocked. The sound is praised as fantastic: clear, clean, dynamic; high resolution adds detail and dynamics without sacrificing musicality.

Alpha Audio – Christiaan Punter

: The sound is immediately captivating with a natural timbre; it is characterized by a combination of robust sound, impressive dynamics, rich mids, and smooth highs without any harshness. Compared to pure NOS topology DACs, they lack that level of transparency, but they offer different sonic characteristics, and the BDA-3.14 comes with a streaming section that really stands out.

SoundStage! Simplifi – Gordon Brockhouse

: Dynamics and fluidity immediately stood out; the device draws you into the music in a way rarely achieved. Sound events in tracks are presented spatially, extending beyond the speaker plane, as if the sounds are coming from the ether. The price-to-quality ratio strongly favors the BDA-3.14: it costs less than the sum of its parts.

StereoLife Magazine – Tomasz Karasiński

: The biggest advantage is the vast array of inputs and outputs—more than most users will ever use. The combination of Bryston’s hardware with Roon, access to high-resolution files, and streaming platforms like Tidal makes for a masterful package that appeals to both audiophiles and music lovers alike.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
