Description

Description of Freakuence!
This is just fantastic. A classic preamp, so much music. The PRA-S10 has a warm character with a slight emphasis on the low frequencies, but without that huge bump. It sounds rich and fills the room with soft contours without becoming harsh. The midrange is open, so vocals come through clearly—not dry, but with some body. Sounds great.
Details
Our engineer has performed a recap, so the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced. Furthermore, all signal paths and solder joints have been inspected, and where necessary, repaired and/or addressed as a preventive measure. As a result, the output values and frequency response match the manufacturer’s specifications. We’re proud to feature it in our shop!

Questions & Answers

What exactly are the connections on the back of the Denon PRA-S10?

How do you adjust the volume and tone controls on the PRA-S10?

There are physical knobs for volume, balance, bass, and treble; there’s also a TONE switch to disable tone control.

How does the memory work when you turn it off? Does it lose the settings?

How quickly does the input selector switch to a different source?

The INPUT SELECTOR switch switches almost instantly between selected sources; you can switch between PHONO, CD, TUNER, AUX, and TAPE inputs.

Can the volume be controlled using the included remote control?

Yes, the RC-185 remote control adjusts volume, selects inputs, and mutes the sound; it works in conjunction with the sensor on the front panel.

What does the REC OUT SELECTOR do?

REC OUT SELECTOR determines which recording source (e.g., TAPE-1 or TAPE-2) is used simultaneously for recording while another input is being monitored.

How can I ensure a safe ground connection and minimize hum?

The turntable’s ground must be connected to the GND screw; correct R/L polarity, balanced connections, and high-quality RCA cables help reduce hum.

For many people, the preamp seems to be becoming less and less relevant. With the advent of DACs featuring increasingly better digital volume control, people are investing less and less in preamps. That’s perfectly understandable from a budgetary standpoint, but from a technical perspective, it’s a shame. As is almost always the case, using a preamp takes most DACs and audio systems to the next level (we’re talking about comparable quality classes here). The signal from the source (the DAC) gets a massive boost, making the overall sound more natural and effortless. It also adds a sense of clarity without sacrificing detail. It’s definitely worth exploring.

Reviews & awards | Denon PRA-S10

Audio Hi-Fi Archive, Germany (HIFI-Archiv.info)

: The PRA-S10 features balanced signal processing, very short signal paths, and technology derived from Denon’s top-of-the-line S-1 preamplifier. Critical reviews highlight the tone control (bass and treble) as a way to adjust the sound character, a feature not standard on all high-end preamplifiers.

AudioReview.com, “Werner Ogiers, an Audiophile,” 1997

: priced around €1,500 in Europe; offers many connection options, including MM and MC turntable inputs, balanced and unbalanced line inputs and outputs; “champagne-colored” exterior; high-quality internal components and relay-based source selection. The phono section delivers a “smooth, easy on the ear, and quite open” sound.

Stereo Review, February 1995

: inclusion in the product overview, in which the PRA-S10 is listed as a preamplifier with both balanced and unbalanced connections, a remote on/off output for the power amplifier, and an aluminum sand-cast frame; use of UHC-MOS transistors in the power supply.

HiFi Room.cz, Denon S-10 II Discussion

: Use with the complete S-10 series (PRA-S10 + POA-S10 monoblocks, etc.) is praised for both its appearance and sound; it is said to sound “neutral and refined”; speakers from brands such as Dynaudio pair well with this system.

HiFi Forum, fan club thread (Germany)

: The PRA-S10, when paired with POA-S10 power amplifiers, is cited as a major improvement over other brands; deep, powerful bass; delicate, silvery highs; and midrange tones that are smoother than those of some older amplifiers; the design and finish are described as “elegant” and “high-quality.”

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
