General description
The Elac BS 243 are powerful bookshelf speakers with a full-fledged stereo image and impressive dynamics. The Elac BS 243 bookshelf speaker delivers a clear soundstage and balanced reproduction, allowing each frequency to have its own space without sounding artificial. Thanks to the detailed sound of the Elac BS 243, both music and movie soundtracks come to life with refinement and precision.
With the Elac BS 243 speaker, you’ll experience sound that’s rich in nuance; the stereo reproduction brings out subtle details, while the dynamics deliver power in quiet passages as well as explosive crescendos. This speaker transforms the listening experience by delivering natural sound that is not only pure but also immersive. The Elac BS 243 stands out for its resonance control: distortion remains low, keeping the soundstage crisp and free of coloration. Sound, balance, and musical reproduction come together to form a coherent system that feels familiar in both acoustically treated listening rooms and ordinary living rooms.
If you’re seriously considering the Elac BS 243, feel free to stop by anytime to compare it with other models or brands. Would you like to schedule a listening session to experience for yourself how the sound reproduction and stereo image perform? We’d also be happy to discuss trade-ins to see if an upgrade or alternative would be a better fit for you.

Brand History
Elac was founded on Sept. 1, 1926, in Kiel, Germany, as Electroacustic GmbH. The company initially focused on developing sonar and communication technology for air and water. In 1948, Elac introduced its first consumer product, the PW1 record player, marking the beginning of their focus on audio technology. During the 1950s and 1960s, the company’s developments included the patented electro-magnetic pickup, which led to the introduction of Moving Magnet cartridges. In the 1980s, Elac began producing loudspeakers, including the famous 4Pi omnidirectional tweeter.

Questions & Answers

What is the difference between the ELAC BS 243 and the BS 243 LE compared to the BS 243.4?

The BS 243 and BS 243 LE use a 150 mm AS-XR woofer, a JET III tweeter, and have a frequency response of approximately 41–50,000 Hz; the Carina BS 243.4 features an updated aluminum cone woofer with compound curvature, a JET folded ribbon tweeter, a frequency response of approximately 46–30,000 Hz, and a nominal impedance of 6 Ω instead of 4 Ω.

What amplifier power ratings are suitable for the BS 243 / BS 243.4?

Amplifiers ranging from 30 to 150 W per channel deliver good sound; the BS 243 has a rated power handling of 60 W and can handle peaks up to 80 W, while the BS 243.4 can handle peaks up to approximately 100 W.

What type of impedance must the amplifier support?

The nominal impedance is 4 Ω (with a minimum of approximately 3.6 Ω at 240 Hz) for the BS 243; the BS 243.4 has a nominal impedance of 6 Ω, with a minimum of approximately 4.8 Ω.

What are the frequency response and crossover characteristics?

The BS 243 divides the frequencies around 2,700 Hz between a 150-mm woofer and a JET III tweeter; the BS 243.4 also uses a crossover around 2.7 kHz with an aluminum woofer and a JET folded ribbon tweeter.

What connectors are on the speaker, and what are the bi-wiring and bi-amping capabilities?

The BS 243 and BS 243.4 feature a pair of binding post screw terminals with separate connections for bass and treble, allowing for bi-wiring or bi-amping once the jumpers are removed.

How does placement affect the performance of the BS 243 or BS 243.4?

The speakers perform better when placed at least 25–30 cm away from the back wall; the BS 243 LE also features a two-part bass control plug to reduce excessive bass when placed close to a wall.

Is there any protection or adjustment option for the high frequencies?

The BS 243 and the LE version feature the JET-DC dispersion controller (foam ring) for adjustable high-frequency response, which is particularly useful in rooms with a lot of reflections.

Can the BS 243 / BS 243.4 be used in a surround sound setup or only in stereo?

Both are suitable for stereo setups, but the BS 243 LE is also often used as a surround sound speaker in home theater systems due to its compact size and excellent performance.

What dimensions and weight should be taken into account during installation or when placing the speaker on a stand?

The BS 243 measures approximately 285 × 170 × 232 mm and weighs about 5.2 kg without the stand; the BS 243.4 measures approximately 319 × 205 × 245 mm and weighs 6.7 kg each.

What finishes and aesthetic options are available, and how do they affect performance?

Available finishes include Black High Gloss, Satin Black, Satin White, and Cherry veneer; these do not affect the frequency response or impedance, but high-gloss finishes may produce slightly more reflections in the room.

The ribbon tweeter delivers a very spacious soundstage thanks to its wide dispersion. The ribbon requires an amplifier capable of providing a stable signal.

You can make a monitor speaker (bookshelf model) sound fantastic. The influence of the amplifier is often underestimated. A monitor won’t sound like a floorstanding speaker… but you can extract an enormous sense of grandeur from it. It’s not just the size that makes audiophiles choose a monitor; the timing of a two-way system also ensures that there are hordes of enthusiasts who wouldn’t even consider a three-way floorstanding speaker. It’s a matter of taste! So please stop by for a comparison.

Reviews & awards | Elac BS 243

What Hi-Fi?

This review describes the Elac BS243 as having a “pacey, hefty, and texturally varied” low end, with a convincing midrange and a blazingly fast high end thanks to the JET foil tweeter. The speaker offers powerful dynamics and a cohesive soundstage, but according to the reviewer, the sound became too intrusive at high volumes and, over time, tiring.

FWD Magazine

highlights the natural “air” in the treble, produced by the ribbon tweeter, and praises the coherent reproduction across all frequencies—vocals benefit noticeably. The mid-bass performs above average within the limitations of a small enclosure, especially when paired with a subwoofer—the sound feels more like that of larger floor-standing speakers than a compact speaker.

High Fidelity (Poland)

finds that the JET driver in the BS243 produces a high end that is smooth, without any harshness or fatigue; cymbals and vocal passages come across with refined texture, without any loud, hissing behavior. The bass is described as surprisingly full and dynamic, although the limitations of the cabinet size are noticeable; room correction by closing the bass reflex port is recommended.

AV Magazin (Germany)

praises the BS243 as a true all-rounder with excellent build quality, ease of installation, and a sound that is convincing with both quiet and loud music. The speaker emphasizes that while larger, more expensive speakers may offer greater depth, the BS243 performs better than expected within its price range.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
