The KEF Reference 1 Meta was developed by KEF's acoustic engineering team led by Jack Oclee-Brown. The speaker uses KEF's 12th-generation Uni-Q driver with MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology), which dampens unwanted sound reflections. The cabinet is precision milled in Kent, UK and heavily reinforced internally. The wiring is high quality, components carefully selected for optimal acoustics.
KEF was founded in 1961 by Raymond Cooke in Maidstone, Kent, United Kingdom. The name derives from Kent Engineering & Foundry, where the original workshop was located on the site of Kent Engineering's steel construction plant. Raymond Cooke was a former BBC audio engineer. From the beginning, the company used synthetic materials and made measurements under controlled conditions. In 1973, a special acoustic laboratory was opened for technical developments. In 1988 KEF developed the Uni-Q driver, in which the treble and midrange speakers are placed together in one axis. Since 2005, it has been headquartered in East Sussex, Great Britain. Over the years, the brand has focused on construction of loudspeakers, including floorstanding models, bookshelf models and flush-mount speakers, as well as portable playback products.
