Background Information
The Leema Elements Precision 24/192 DAC was designed with a focus on exceptional audio performance and precision. The device was co-developed by Mallory Nicholls and Lee Taylor, former sound engineers at the BBC. The DAC utilizes high-quality components such as ESS Sabre chips for accurate digital-to-analog conversion. The enclosure is sturdy and meticulously finished for optimal resonance control. Internal wiring is of high quality to ensure signal integrity. Leema Acoustics manufactures its devices in the United Kingdom, carefully selecting the source of its materials to ensure the best sound quality.
Brand History
Leema Acoustics was originally founded in 1998 as a means to further explore the fanatical interest in audio reproduction of its two founders, ex-BBC engineers Lee Taylor and Mallory Nicholls. Their first project focused on pushing the boundaries of loudspeaker design, determined to create a miniature loudspeaker that could outperform a system many times larger. The design principles and mathematical models available at the time were unable to create the product Lee and Mallory envisioned, so they began four years of intensive work, culminating in the Xen. A mic monitor of unsurpassed technical and musical excellence, Xen was originally available only to the professional audio market. As audiophiles became increasingly aware of the quality of Leema products, the Xen spread to the domestic market. After the success of their first product, Mallory and Lee decided to focus their expertise on audio electronics. Their first product, the Tucana integrated amplifier, was released in early 2006 and later that year won the distinguished Hi Fi News award for amplifier of the year. Shortly thereafter, the Antila CD player was introduced and almost immediately won the prestigious What Hi-Fi? Sound & Vision best CD player award in 2007.

Questions & Answers

What digital formats does the Leema Elements Precision DAC support?

The DAC supports signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz via coaxial and USB inputs, and up to 96 kHz/24-bit via optical input.

How does the volume control work on this DAC?

There is an analog volume control on the front panel that can operate in fixed or variable mode and can directly control the volume in an Elements amplifier via a LIPS link.

What inputs are available, and how do you select them?

There are 3 coaxial, 3 optical (TOSLINK), 1 USB (asynchronous), and analog RCA plus front mini-jack inputs; you select the input using the device’s buttons or rotary knob.

Does this model require specific drivers to use it via USB on a computer?

Yes, installing specific drivers is recommended for Windows; Mac users generally do not need any additional drivers.

Can the display be adjusted or turned off?

There are settings for the display timeout and information display, and the display can be configured to turn off automatically.

Does the Leema Elements Precision DAC have a headphone output?

Yes, it has a 3.5 mm jack output; when this is in use, the analog output is disabled and the volume is routed to the headphones.

What outputs does this DAC have?

The DAC offers both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) analog outputs.

How does the LIPS system connection work?

With the LIPS connectors, multiple Leema components can be linked so that a single remote control or volume control can operate the entire system; the DAC can act as the master.

In which situations do you use fixed output versus variable output?

Fixed output is useful when an amplifier or preamplifier controls the volume; variable output is used when the DAC itself must pass on volume settings, or when using amplifiers without their own volume control.

Is the USB input galvanically isolated, and what does that mean for jitter?

Yes, the USB input is galvanically isolated and operates asynchronously, which allows the DAC to determine the clock signal itself and minimizes the impact of jitter caused by the computer’s power supply.

Reviews & awards | Leema Elements Precision 24/192 DAC

EnjoyTheMusic.com (Phil Gold):

In this review, the Leema Elements Precision DAC is praised for its warm, detailed, and musical sound. The bass is described as rich and full, the vocals as smooth, and the high frequencies as well-detailed without ever becoming harsh. The criticism focuses on slightly less presence in the high end than some competitors, but the overall sound remains very inviting and lively.

StereoTimes:

The review highlights the flexibility of this device: analog volume control, multiple digital inputs up to 24/192, and various control options. In terms of sound, it is described as extremely musical, smooth, and full of character; sometimes a bit harsh at startup, but never sharp. The bass is perceived as full and powerful, with a relaxed presentation that is particularly charming when listening to music with deep resonance.

What Hi-Fi? (2012):

Here, the
midrange
Highly praised: expressive and open, with great detail in the higher frequencies and subtle piano tones. However, according to this review, the low frequencies lack the weight and stability of the best DACs; the timing is also perceived as less precise on more complex tracks, which can disrupt the coherence. Ease of use and menu navigation also receive some criticism.

Hi-Fi World (August 2016):

Measured performance indicates that the DAC/preamplifier section of the Elements series exhibits relatively high distortion at very low levels: 0.4% at −60 dB with hi-res 24-bit audio. The dynamic range is measured at approximately 100 dB with hi-res audio, which is slightly lower than what is possible with modern reference designs. The frequency response is more than adequate: flat well beyond 20 kHz, with support for 192 kHz digital input.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
