The LUMIN U2 is a digital music transport that focuses on pure digital performance. It is designed for use with an external DAC and offers support for various streaming services such as TIDAL, Qobuz and Spotify. The LUMIN app makes it easy to manage and play music.

The LUMIN U2 was designed by the team at Pixel Magic Systems in Hong Kong, with a strong focus on minimal signal interference and maximum precision in digital audio playback. The fully dual power supply, CNC-machined aluminum enclosure and fully shielded digital section attest to high build quality. Internal components have been carefully selected, including flat internal cables for optimal signal integrity.

In 2012, LUMIN introduced the world’s first network player capable of playing DSD files. After two years of development and hundreds of hours of critical listening, this product was launched with a single forum post. Since then, LUMIN has expanded its lineup to nine models, ranging in price points. All products share a focus on natural music playback, continuous software development and a seamless streaming experience. USB ports can transport up to the highest possible bit rate. Although sometimes they are only for connecting an external drive.

Optical input, interference-free and therefore proven to be the better option with some dacs, although they are often limiting in bitrate (yet there are dacs that let in up to 24 bit/192 kHz). The cable used is hugely important we can report, we’d be happy to let you assess these differences.

SPDIF is the abbreviation for Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format. (Nice that we, as a small country, have had influence there!) It is a standard for the transmission of a digital signal between, for example, a streamer or CD drive to dac. The cable used makes quite a difference in playback. A standard cable shows mostly a messy and abundant low, and the middle and high sludge into a mess. There are many who dispute this. Be skeptical, but there has to be a time for evaluation.

The BNC connector (in full Bayonet-Neill-Concelman connector) has a bayonet connection (rotary system) that requires a pin on the male side that attaches to the female side using a spring. This prevents the two components from becoming loose. There are manufacturers who consider this the only good coaxial connection. Pure adapters available in the shop!

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
