Brand history
Pass Labs was founded in 1991 by Nelson Pass. That same year, the company developed the Aleph 0, a single amplifier with Class A topology. The Aleph series was later expanded to include models such as the Aleph 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 30. In the mid-1990s, Pass Labs introduced the Super-Symmetry-based X Series. In 2003, the succeeding XA series was introduced, again using Class A topology. Next appeared the XP preamplifiers and phono amplifiers. In later years, both the X.5 and XA.5 series amplifiers were developed and put into production. Nelson Pass’ First Watt product line was also added to the lineup. Models received updates that included the .8 series.

Questions & Answers

What is the “intrinsic gain” of the Aleph P, and how do you adjust it?

The intrinsic gain is controlled via the left and right channel gain controls to achieve optimal performance with different source levels; for high-level sources, the gain is reduced, and for low-level sources, it is increased.

How does the volume system work with the master level control?

The master level control uses a discrete 256-position attenuator and features four poles, ensuring precise volume control; the active gain circuit remains constant regardless of the master volume level.

What inputs and outputs does the Aleph P have, and what about balanced and unbalanced connections?

There are four sets of input connectors and two output connectors; the preamp supports both balanced and unbalanced inputs and outputs, and can convert signals between these modes without additional switches or adapters.

What is the output level in balanced and unbalanced modes?

The maximum output is approximately 15 volts RMS for balanced output and around 8 volts RMS for unbalanced output.

How does the Aleph P perform at lower loads, and what impact does that have on distortion or gain?

The Aleph P can act as a current source when driving a low-impedance load approaching a short circuit; although the gain does decrease at lower impedances, no additional distortion occurs.

How does the input selection function work, and what kind of visual feedback is provided?

The input is selected using a rotary knob on the front panel; the selected input is indicated by a blue LED above the knob.

Is there a remote control, and if so, what does it control?

Yes, there is an optional remote control; it changes the input selection using the left/right buttons and adjusts the master volume using the up/down buttons.

What is the frequency response of the Aleph P?

The –3 dB points are at approximately 5 Hz and above 100 kHz, resulting in a very wide frequency range with minimal roll-off at both ends.

What about noise level, crosstalk, and common-mode rejection?

The noise floor is below -120 dBV (20–20 kHz), crosstalk is approximately -90 dB, and common-mode rejection is around -80 dB in the 20–20 kHz range.

What power supply does the Aleph P use, and how is the internal power supply configured?

The preamp uses a toroidal transformer with an unregulated 85-volt system, followed by active regulation and passive filtering to power the constant-current sources; switches and control systems have their own regulation.

Reviews & awards | Pass Labs Aleph P

Audio magazine – “THE PASS ALEPH-P … Labs Aleph-P is very good … AN EXCELLENT PREAMP THAT SERVES THE MUSIC WELL.”

In its November 1996 issue, the magazine explains that the Aleph-P is “right away… a very good-sounding preamp,” with outstanding definition and detail, as well as excellent spaciousness, dimension, imaging, and soundstage. When some CDs produced a slightly shrill sound, this was remedied by using different interconnects and speaker cables; the bass was less prominent in terms of “slam,” but retained good realism and detail.

TNT-Audio – “The Aleph P Preamplifier”

It emphasizes the neutral sound: “perfectly homogeneous behavior at all frequencies,” without any audible coloration. Yet the bass is not described as being as aggressive as with other solid-state amplifiers; voices in the midrange are very present; the treble is fully present, clear, and unpolished. Macro- and microdynamics are “decidedly good”; instruments are “carved… printed” with precision in the stereo image.

Pass Laboratories Service Manual (Rev. 1.7) – Technical Resource

Confirms that the Aleph-P uses only a single balanced gain stage, consisting of Class A power MOSFETs, with very high linearity thanks to a single active amplification section without feedback in that path. Bandwidth typically extends to ±200 kHz (-3 dB). Common-mode rejection is approximately -60 dB.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
