Description

Description Freakuence!
One of the best-performing streamers we’ve ever had here in the shop. Sure, it’s pricey, so you hope for something—but you don’t know exactly what that should be. Now it’s clear; we know. Above all, an incredible amount gets filtered out: detail, power, speed, depth….there are others that can do that, thankfully… but this device eliminates noise, distortion, and harshness—they’re barely there, if at all—so everything that’s left really pops! Very tangible, rounded, real. If you never go to unamplified concerts, stop by that street musician sometime, hoping he or she is any good, and listen to that instrument—that’s “real-life analog”; that’s what we always hope for here and sometimes get just a little bit of. This streamer has brought us one step closer to that goal.

General Description
The Grimm Audio MU1 is a music streamer and digital music source from Grimm Audio that functions as both a Roon Core and a Roon Endpoint, designed to play digital files over your home network. The MU1 processes digital inputs such as AES3, S/PDIF, and USB, and outputs signals via AES/EBU and LS1 outputs, among others.
This streamer/audio server delivers an impressive stereo image thanks to precise oversampling and an internal FPGA processor, which minimizes jitter. The detail in the sound is preserved, even with high-resolution files, while the dynamics remain clear and controlled. The Grimm Audio MU1 supports streaming services such as Tidal and Qobuz and operates via UPnP connections; the latest firmware update improves filters and further optimizes integration with network sources.
Using the main knob and display makes switching sources, adjusting the volume, and navigating menus more intuitive. The Grimm Audio MU1 combines the functions of a streamer, server, and digital controller without the need for separate components. If you’re looking for a high-end source for detailed music nights or quiet listening moments, you’ll definitely want to give this a listen and compare it to others. Feel free to schedule a listening session or let’s discuss trade-in options together—that way, you can experience the added value of the Grimm Audio MU1 for yourself.

Reviews & awards | Grimm Audio MU1

Haute Fidélité

– In this recent French review, the Grimm Audio MU1 is praised as a “true master of digital files”; the player offers exceptional bass, a spacious and stable soundstage, and high expressiveness, while maintaining transparency without digital harshness or roughness. The upper-midrange is described as magical, and its neutrality and accuracy make the MU1 one of the best digital sources on the market.

Hi-fi Voice (Czech Republic)

– When listening to the MU1 paired with a Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC, it was striking how the device primarily adds calm and control, while retaining dynamic “explosiveness.” Smaller details become more audible, voices become more intelligible, and control remains strong at both loud and soft volumes. When the MU1 is disconnected, the system noticeably loses intensity and character.

Lowbeats (Germany)

– The MU1 takes music to the next level: the sound becomes clearer, richer in detail, with sharper contours and greater immersion than with comparable players such as the Lumin U1. Even with musically rough or less hi-fi material, textures stand out that are lost elsewhere. The bottom line is that once you hear the difference, you won’t want to go back.

Fairaudio (Germany)

– The MU1 ranks among the best music servers the author knows. It is tonally neutral and reveals great detail in the midrange and treble, with a precise and wide soundstage. The bass is dry, tight, and without any rounding off, especially when paired with a high-quality system. To truly shine, the rest of the system must be of matching quality.

Hifi.nl

– The Grimm Audio MU1 is ideal for those who want to enjoy music at an extremely high level without worrying about cables or technical tweaks. The device integrates Roon software, performs studio-quality digital processing, and also enhances other digital sources. Drawbacks include the fact that the software is not yet fully mature in some areas, there is no graphical display, and external DACs must support PCM at 176.4 and 192 kHz.

Einsnull

– According to this review, the MU1 delivers exceptionally transparent sound; even with tracks featuring “brickwall mastering,” it offers a clear improvement in dynamics and spatial definition. According to Einsnull, upsampling is the MU1’s standout feature, but its user-friendliness and elegance are also praised as key qualities.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
