Description

Description Freakuence!
The Harbeth NELSON PRO is an interesting addition. With a built-in 50W Class-D amplifier and a 5-inch driver—identical to the one in the HL-P3 mini monitor—this unit provides a solid foundation. The digital signal processing optimizes the crossover at 75 Hz, allowing the NELSON PRO to seamlessly integrate with the bass response of the main monitor. This results in a spacious soundstage that extends from floor to ceiling. An additional advantage is its compatibility with various monitors, such as the P3ESR XDs and Falcon’s Gold Badge LS3/5as. This makes the NELSON PRO a versatile choice for a wide range of setups.
General description
The Harbeth NELSON PRO is an innovative combination of a subwoofer and speaker stand, designed to enrich the soundstage of compact speakers such as the Harbeth P3ESR and BBC LS3/5A. By integrating a 5-inch Harbeth woofer and a 50-watt digital amplifier, the NELSON PRO delivers deeper and more controlled bass reproduction without taking up any extra space.

With the sub-level control, you can easily adjust the bass level based on your personal preferences and the acoustics of your listening room. The use of advanced composite materials, inspired by the aerospace industry, ensures high rigidity and low weight, contributing to accurate and dynamic sound reproduction.

Would you like to experience the impact of the Harbeth NELSON PRO for yourself? Schedule a listening session in our listening room and discover how this subwoofer stand takes your music experience to the next level.

Brand history
Harbeth, founded in 1977 by Dudley Harwood, a former engineer at the BBC, is known for its high-quality loudspeakers. The brand gets its name from an amalgamation of Harwood and the name of his wife, Elizabeth. Harwood introduced the polypropylene cone, an innovation that changed the speaker industry by offering better frequency response and less distortion than traditional paper diaphragms.

In 1986, Alan Shaw took over the company, leading to further expansion and refinement of the range. Shaw remained true to the philosophy of natural sound reproduction, making Harbeth a favorite among audiophiles. The partnership with the BBC strengthened their reputation, with models such as the Monitor 40 used in professional environments.

A key development was the introduction of RADIAL™ technology in the 1990s, a proprietary plastic material that significantly improved the performance of their speakers. Harbeth continues to make speakers by hand in England, with a strong focus on quality and detail. Today, the brand is respected worldwide for its faithful reproduction of sound, staying true to its roots and small production capacity to ensure high quality standards.

Reviews & awards | Harbeth NELSON PRO

Audiohaven

They highlight the subtle contribution of the Harbeth Nelson subwoofer to the LS3/5a speakers, noting that the deep bass—which is inaudible without a subwoofer—stands out. They note that volumes above 50% in a room of about 40m² create a sense of unease, while anything below that produces a nice, subtle deep bass. However, the Nelson’s aesthetics are less appreciated, with comments that its design is not considered attractive. In addition, the price of €4,000 is cited as a drawback.

월간 오디오

praised the innovative integration of a subwoofer into the Harbeth Nelson, which allows users to easily incorporate a high-quality subwoofer without taking up any extra space. They emphasize that even speakers with large woofers cannot match the performance of a dedicated subwoofer like the Nelson.

Alpha Audio

highlights the ease of installation and setup of the Harbeth Nelson subwoofer/stand, which pairs perfectly with the speaker and combines the subwoofer and stand into a single unit. They note that the Nelson doesn’t keep the bass in an iron grip, but rather supports the monitor’s characteristic fluidity, resulting in a rounder, more expansive sound with a wider stereo image. However, they point out that the Nelson is only available in black and is not inexpensive.

Audio T

They emphasize the challenge of finding the right position for the Harbeth Nelson Bass Extender stands, noting that finding the sweet spot was difficult and that placing the Nelsons too far back resulted in excessive bass response. They note that the Nelson negates the advantage of a separate subwoofer, namely the ability to optimally position it in a different location from the main speakers to reduce placement issues and bass resonances.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
