Harbeth doesn’t make stands? Actually, they do—check this one out. The Nelson is an active subwoofer that also serves as a speaker stand, specially designed for the P3ESR and LS3/5A models. With a built-in DSP chip, the Nelson optimizes the low-frequency response, ensuring seamless integration with the main speakers. The volume control is easy to adjust.
General description

This unique solution integrates a 5-inch Harbeth woofer with a 50-watt digital amplifier, resulting in impressive bass reproduction without taking up any extra space.

Thanks to advanced digital signal processing (DSP), the Harbeth Nelson optimizes the crossover frequency, phase, and shape, resulting in seamless integration with the main monitor. Brand history
Harbeth, founded in 1977 by Dudley Harwood, a former engineer at the BBC, is known for its high-quality loudspeakers. The brand gets its name from an amalgamation of Harwood and the name of his wife, Elizabeth. Harwood introduced the polypropylene cone, an innovation that changed the speaker industry by offering better frequency response and less distortion than traditional paper diaphragms.

In 1986, Alan Shaw took over the company, leading to further expansion and refinement of the range. Shaw remained true to the philosophy of natural sound reproduction, making Harbeth a favorite among audiophiles. The partnership with the BBC strengthened their reputation, with models such as the Monitor 40 used in professional environments.

A key development was the introduction of RADIAL™ technology in the 1990s, a proprietary plastic material that significantly improved the performance of their speakers. Harbeth continues to make speakers by hand in England, with a strong focus on quality and detail. Today, the brand is respected worldwide for its faithful reproduction of sound, staying true to its roots and small production capacity to ensure high quality standards.

Reviews & awards | Harbeth NELSON

Audiohaven

describes the Harbeth Nelson as a subwoofer that integrates seamlessly with the LS3/5a speakers, without any noticeable “gap” in the mid-low/low frequencies. At volume settings below 50%, the Nelson delivers subtle, deep bass reproduction that the LS3/5a lacks without a subwoofer. However, the design is less appreciated, and the price of €4,000 is considered high.

Stereo.de

emphasizes that the Harbeth Nelson is an active subwoofer that also serves as a speaker stand, specifically designed for BBC LS3/5A speakers. The Nelson is intended to compensate for the lack of bass volume in these compact speakers and is equipped with a built-in DSP for optimal sound tuning.

Audiomagic

quotes a review from hifi.nl in which the Harbeth Nelson is praised as a “discreet additional bass driver” that supports the bookshelf speaker without being intrusive. The Nelson adds a pleasant musical low end, giving pieces such as Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1 more power and allure.

Audio T

notes that the Harbeth Nelson raises the listening height and initially presents challenges when it comes to positioning. However, optimal placement results in balanced bass reproduction without unwanted resonances. The Nelson eliminates the advantage of a separate subwoofer that can be placed elsewhere to reduce placement issues.

Fairaudio

emphasizes that the Harbeth Nelson is designed to support the smallest Harbeth models in the low-frequency range and extend the lower limit of the frequency response down to 35 hertz. The subwoofers feature a power control and are connected in parallel with the speakers, resulting in a more detailed and clearer musical reproduction across the entire frequency range.

Hifi.co.uk

describes the Harbeth Nelson as a speaker stand that not only provides physical support but also actively contributes to the sound reproduction by functioning as a subwoofer. The combination with the P3ESR XD is considered impressive, delivering stunning musical performance and a perfect listening height.

Stereophile

emphasizes that the Harbeth Nelson, when paired with the P3ESR XD, delivers a unique projection of sound energy into the listening room. The Nelson provides a direct and lively listening experience, in which its placement and distance from the listener are crucial for an optimal sound experience.

StereoNET

reports that the Harbeth Nelson is a subwoofer and stand in one, designed to enhance the sound of small speakers. The Nelson features a 5-inch driver and 50-watt digital amplification, with a built-in DSP for optimal integration and bass control.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
