Brand History
Hegel was founded in Norway in the late 1980s by Bent Holter. In his graduate project at Trondheim University of Technology, he developed a solution for reducing distortion in transistor amplifiers. This led to the technology that later became known as SoundEngine. In 1988, the name Hegel was first used for an amplifier. The company released several CD players and amplifiers in the 1990s. In 1996, the first fully balanced amplifier was introduced. Around 2004, the brand began developing DA converters. Later products featured networking capabilities to support digital music playback. Hegel exclusively markets its own electronics, developing both the circuit design and the necessary software itself. The company conducts international distribution of its products from Norway.

Reviews & awards | Hegel H120

StereoNET

rates the Hegel H120 as a versatile integrated amplifier with excellent build quality and a wide range of features. The sound quality is praised for its dynamics and precision, thanks in part to Hegel’s proprietary SoundEngine technology. The internal DAC, based on the AKM AK4490 chip, delivers smooth and accurate playback. Although the H120 does not offer native DSD or MQA support, this is viewed as an acceptable compromise given its overall performance and pricing.

Testberichte.de

highlights the Hegel H120’s harmonious sound, particularly in the high-frequency range and vocal reproduction. The bass performance is described as pulsating and with bite. The device offers a solid range of connectivity options but lacks Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality. The price is considered high, but the review states that the sound quality justifies it.

Fairaudio

notes that the Hegel H120 is a characterful amplifier that impresses within its price range. Thanks to its impressive performance and high damping factor, it is suitable for a variety of speakers. The tonal balance is slightly bright, with excellent dynamics, responsiveness, and resolution. For enthusiasts who appreciate rich detail and dynamic range, the H120 is an excellent choice.

Alpha Audio

highlights the versatility and compact design of the Hegel H120. The sound is described as fresh and light, without sounding cold or clinical. Vocal performance is pure and free of harsh edges. The stereo imaging is wide and stable, with a spacious sweet spot. The internal AKM DAC is praised for its performance, although the lack of Roon support is cited as a drawback.

HIFI.DE

highlights the Hegel H120’s almost tube-like sound quality, without the drawbacks of tube amplifiers. The amplifier remains perfectly balanced in the bass and midrange, even with demanding speakers. Compared to other solid-state amplifiers, the H120 offers a more lively and expressive sound, with impressive bass control and dynamics.

Hi-Fi Choice

highlights the improved digital performance of the Hegel H120 compared to its predecessor, the Röst. The new DAC, derived from the H190, delivers a smoother, more accurate, and more dynamic sound reproduction. Hegel’s proprietary SynchroDAC and MasterClock work together to minimize jitter and conversion errors, resulting in a higher dynamic range and lower distortion.

Hi-Fi+

emphasizes that the Hegel H120 benefits from the combination of analog technology from the Röst and digital technology from the H190. This results in an amplifier compatible with modern streaming services such as UPnP/DLNA, AirPlay Connect and Spotify Connect. The H120 delivers 75 watts per channel and utilizes Hegel's proprietary technologies, such as SoundEngine 2 and SyncroDAC, to deliver enhanced sound quality.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
