The KEF R3 Meta is designed according to KEF's acoustic philosophy: clear, accurate sound with minimal distortion. The speaker features the latest Uni-Q driver array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), which absorbs unwanted resonances up to 99%. The cabinet is reinforced with Constrained Layer Damping for reduced vibration. Developed by KEF's acoustics team led by Jack Oclee-Brown.
KEF was founded in 1961 in Maidstone, Kent, by former BBC ringmaster Raymond Cooke. The name is derived from Kent Engineering & Foundry, the site on which its first headquarters was located. In its early years, the company developed products using synthetic materials and mathematical models. KEF introduced the Reference concept in 1973, where each pair of systems was electronically matched. In the 1980s, KEF used digital technologies to optimize production. In 1988, the first computer-aided acoustic measurement system was used. Uni-Q driver technology was introduced in 1988 and has since been used in several models. KEF has had collaborations with outside designers, including Ross Lovegrove. In 2011, the Blade, the first model based on the single point source concept, was released. KEF has offices worldwide, including Hong Kong, Germany, France, Japan and the US. Its headquarters and acoustic research department are in Maidstone.
