Description

Description: Freakuence!
Hybrid amplifier! With tubes in the preamp stage, this uniquely built machine delivers a very musical sound. It also features a tone control that effectively separates the frequencies. Music right away—that’s our promise.
General description
This integrated amplifier combines a tube preamplifier with a solid-state power amplifier. The preamplifier uses two 12AX7a and two 12AT7 vacuum tubes housed in protective cages. The power amplifier delivers 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 160 watts per channel at 4 ohms. The all-analog design offers two unbalanced, one balanced and one Moving Magnet phono input for turntables. All four inputs can be given user-friendly names for easy operation. Bass and treble controls allow the sound to be adjusted to personal preference. A subwoofer output is available for connecting an active subwoofer to amplify low frequencies. The amplifier features patented heat sinks connected to advanced transistors, eliminating warm-up time. A powerful microprocessor ensures smooth operation, while high-quality audio components deliver the best possible sound. In addition, Power Guard® technology protects speakers by monitoring the output signal and preventing clipping. Upon activation, the vacuum tubes flash amber and return to green when the signal returns to normal. The amplifier has a polished stainless steel chassis with a classically designed nameplate on each side.

Reviews & awards | McIntosh MA252

What Hi-Fi?

describes the McIntosh MA252 as a hybrid integrated amplifier with an unusual tone control. The bass control provides a peak boost or cut of approximately ±10 dB at 75 Hz, resulting in an emphasis on the upper low frequencies and minimal impact on the lower frequencies. The treble control functions more like a conventional treble control, but with a limited shelving response. The signal-to-noise ratio is average, at 72 dB unweighted and 76 dB A-weighted at 1 watt output, improving to 92 dB and 95 dB, respectively, at rated output. Square wave tests show a slight 1.5 dB lift in the frequency response around 107 kHz, resulting in a slight overshoot on the leading edge of the oscillograms. Nevertheless, the amplifier remains stable when driving reactive loads.

Stereo+ Magazine

describes the MA252 as a beautifully designed amplifier that offers a relaxed approach to music, yet delivers sound with control and power. They call it “pure pleasure for the ears” and emphasize that voices and instruments sound natural and beautiful. The MA252 received a 5-star rating from the magazine.

Lyd & Bilde

calls the MA252 an “alluring” integrated amplifier that charms both the eye and the ear. They highlight its solid dynamic range and powerful bass performance. The amplifier is praised for its ability to sound bigger than its size would suggest and received a rating of 5 out of 6 stars.

Son-Vidéo

considers the MA252 a “versatile, solid, and refined” amplifier that effortlessly brings out the best in speakers. They highlight its ability to make music sound natural, even at low volumes, with a sound signature that is smooth, energetic, and consistently serene. Even with demanding tracks, a sense of cohesion is maintained.

HIFI Live Magazine

describes the MA252 as a time machine that transports listeners to both the past and the future, with a soundstage spanning 25 square meters and the ability to disappear from the room. The amplifier received the magazine’s High Quality Award.

PartTimeAudiophile

calls the MA252 a “best of both worlds” product that offers a seductive combination of tube romance and solid-state resolution and authority. They highlight its superior simplicity and tangible connection to music, resulting in addictive listening sessions. The amplifier is praised for its performance and attractive price.

ON Magazine

They rate the MA252 as a fast, powerful, and precise device that retains McIntosh’s sublime charm. They describe it as an almost unexpected gift from McIntosh at the end of 2017 and honor it with their Top Audio Award.

HiFiReport

emphasizes that the MA252 offers a warm, rounded tone and texture, with a sound that has no harsh edges. The low frequencies are substantial in weight but not in quality, and the amplifier delivers rich detail and information. Although it is slightly less fast than McIntosh’s high-end models, it offers an elegant and natural sound.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
