Description: Freakuence!
McIntosh has been building the MC275 for decades; many consider it a must-have. This MK6 is the latest version. Enormous power and flexibility. Not a hint of harshness. It’s also sublime with monitors—it makes them sound almost like floorstanding speakers thanks to its perfect control (it handles floorstanding speakers effortlessly, of course).
General description
The McIntosh MC275 MK6 is a tube amplifier known for its rich sound and precise reproduction. This amplifier delivers 75 watts per channel in stereo mode and can deliver 150 watts in mono mode, resulting in a dynamic and detailed soundstage. Thanks to its Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers, the MC275 MK6 offers a wide frequency range and minimal distortion, resulting in a clear stereo image and a natural sound. Reviews & awards | McIntosh MC275 MK6

Stereophile.com

describes the McIntosh MC275 as a classic design with a rich, inviting sound devoid of any harshness. Although it doesn’t offer the highest resolution and detail, it delivers a spacious soundstage with excellent imaging and a smooth tonal balance from bass to treble. The amplifier sounds powerful and dynamic, although it may be outperformed by other high-end solid-state and tube amplifiers in the low frequencies. Its appearance is retro, featuring a polished stainless-steel chassis and glowing tubes. The MC275 is a pleasure to listen to, with a sweet and engaging sound that invites hours of listening to your favorite music. While other amplifiers may perform better in specific areas, the MC275’s overall presentation is undeniably musical and natural.

Long Live Vinyl

describes the MC275 MK VI as an extremely high-end power amplifier with an impressive appearance. With 75 watts per channel and a weight of 30.5 kg, the amplifier is dominated by large transformers and tubes. This sixth-generation model has been refined over the years and features both balanced and unbalanced outputs. A striking feature is the LED lighting on the tubes, which illuminate during operation: amber during warm-up, green when the amplifier is ready for use, and red in the event of a tube failure. The speaker terminals are patented, gold-plated Solid Cinch models, and the chassis is made of polished stainless steel.

HomeTheaterReview

highlights the legendary status of the McIntosh MC275 among audiophiles. The original version was produced from 1961 to 1970 and was reintroduced in 1991 as a tribute to McIntosh’s late president. The MC275 is a tube amplifier that delivers 75 watts per channel into 8, 4, or 2 ohms, or 150 watts in bridged mono mode, via four KT-88 output tubes. The design utilizes the Unity Coupled Circuit transformer, resulting in a wide frequency range and low distortion. The sound is richly detailed and inviting, without any harshness. Although it does not offer the highest resolution and detail, it delivers a spacious soundstage with excellent imaging and a smooth tonal balance from bass to treble. The MC275 sounds powerful and dynamic, though it may be outperformed in the low frequencies by other high-end solid-state and tube amplifiers. VintageSonics

notes that the sixth-generation MC275 is a 2-channel tube amplifier delivering 75 watts per channel into 4/8/16Ω (150W in mono parallel). The design utilizes McIntosh’s Unity Coupled output transformers and Sentry Monitor protection. Although the measured performance is solid for a transformer-coupled tube design, it clearly lags behind modern transparency standards. The build quality and service history are excellent, but the price-performance ratio is extremely low compared to today’s objectively clean solid-state alternatives.

Frieve - Audio Review

rates the MC275 VI as an iconic 2×75W tube amplifier with solid performance for a transformer-coupled tube design, but clearly below modern transparency benchmarks. The build quality and service history are excellent, but the price-to-performance ratio is extremely low compared to today’s objectively clean solid-state alternatives.

Real HiFi Help

compares the MC275 MK6 to the MA9000 and notes that the MC275 has a warmer and more forgiving sound, with a classic, regal tone that is slightly cleaner in the latest MK6 version. The MA9000 is brighter and more powerful, but can sound thinner, sharper, and more analytical on much lower-end speakers. The MC275 is better suited for those seeking a warmer and more pleasant listening experience.

Aussie Audio Mart

highlights the timeless musicality and enjoyment of the MC275 MK6, with powerful and authoritative bass and a lively presentation without harshness. It is ideal for classical music and jazz, offering rich, natural reproduction, clarity, and depth. Although it does not offer the ultimate in dynamics and extension, it is positioned as a “king” that “excels everywhere

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this.
