Background information
Michi, a division of Rotel, is known for its uncompromising approach to audiophile design and technology. The Michi Q5 is designed with premium materials such as heavy-duty aluminum enclosures for optimal vibration damping. Internal components, including large toroidal transformers, ensure a clean power supply and minimal noise. Engineers have paid attention to every detail, including internal wiring and shortened signal paths, to maximize performance. All products are hand-assembled in Japan using carefully selected components from global suppliers.
Brand history
Michi is a sub-brand of the Japanese company Rotel, introduced in the 1990s as a range of high-quality audio equipment. The original Michi products, such as the RHC-10 preamplifier and the RHB-10 power amplifier, were characterized by their silver finish and red-colored sides. This line was aimed primarily at the Japanese market, but soon found worldwide success due to its superior audio performance and use of classic Japanese rosewood side panels. After several years, production of the original Michi line was discontinued. In 2019, Rotel revived the Michi brand with the introduction of new models, including the P5 preamplifier, the S5 stereo power amplifier and the M8 monoblock power amplifier. The result of three years of development, these new products combine advanced technology with contemporary design, continuing the tradition of providing high-quality audio components.

Reviews & awards

What Hi-Fi?, November 10, 2025 —
The Rotel Michi Q5 “is beautifully made and delivers a tempting combination of insight, power, and delicacy,” according to the review, which emphasizes that the player offers impressive detail resolution, clear neutrality in tonal character, powerful, tight bass, and expressive dynamics.
Hi-Fi Choice (via HFC Reprint), circa May 2025 —
This review praises the spacious stereo image, the powerful and responsive bass, and the precision of the vocal reproduction, with percussion coming through clearly without any “muddiness” in the low end; The Q5 is described as “a great-sounding giant CD player” with excellent build quality and a feature-rich DAC section.
Hi-Fi News, April 2025 —
The Q5 is praised for its ability to flawlessly reproduce both refined classical passages and dynamic pieces; the CD playback was considered sufficient to justify using the unit on its own, despite the lack of SACD compatibility, and the DAC section was regarded as technically advanced, with strong measurement results in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and channel separation.
Fidelity / Audiotra (D-A-CH region), March 2025 —
The reviewer notes that the Q5 delivers a pleasurable listening experience even with technically imperfect CDs, reveals unexpected details in familiar recordings, and that its design, choice of materials, build quality, and controls are top-notch; despite its price, it was called one of the most “affordable” products in its class.
Hi-Fi News (Lab Report, again), April 2025 —
Technical details highlighted: The ESS ES9028PRO DAC used here delivers excellent performance, with a very high signal-to-noise ratio (115.5 dB in balanced mode), lower distortion compared to comparable units, and a wide frequency response; the only minor criticism is that high-frequency detail is sometimes slightly less prominent, which is noticeable on certain recordings.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
