Questions & Answers

What does it mean that the Studio 89 has an “MTM driver array”?

This is a configuration in which two mid-bass drivers flank the tweeter, ensuring symmetry in vertical dispersion and better sound imaging.

How powerful does the amplifier need to be to get the most out of the Studio 89?

The recommended power output is between 50 and 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms, with a continuous power output of 150 watts RMS, to ensure distortion-free listening.

What is the Studio 89’s frequency response, and what does that mean for the low and high frequencies?

The frequency response ranges from approximately 48 Hz to 60 kHz (-6 dB as measured in the room), which means it can reproduce both decent bass and highly detailed high frequencies.

Can these speakers be bi-wired?

No, the Studio 89 is not bi-wireable: there is only one pair of binding posts per speaker.

What is the effect of the HiVe II vents on the back?

They help improve airflow and reduce turbulence, resulting in more controlled bass and a reduction in unwanted resonances.

What connections or connectivity options do the Studio 89 speakers have?

The Studio 89 are passive speakers: they have no power supply or digital connections of their own; they must be connected to an external amplifier via speaker cables.

Do I need a speaker stand, or can I just place the speakers on furniture?

It is recommended to use the separate Studio 89 stands to position the tweeter at ear level; furniture can resonate and degrade the imaging and bass response.

How far from the back and side walls should the Studio 89 be placed for optimal soundstage?

Start with a distance of at least about 30 cm from the back wall and about 91 cm from the side walls; move them closer if there isn’t enough bass, and farther away if there’s too much bass.

What is the impedance of the Studio 89, and what does that fluctuation to 4.2 ohms mean?

The nominal impedance is 6 ohms, with a minimum of 4.2 ohms around 220 Hz; this means the amplifier must be able to deliver sufficient current at lower impedances.

What does “ported cabinet design” mean in the specs?

It means the cabinet is equipped with bass-reflex or HiVe II ports on the back; these ports enhance the bass and improve efficiency at lower frequencies.

The ribbon tweeter delivers a very spacious soundstage thanks to its wide dispersion. The ribbon requires an amplifier capable of providing a stable signal.

You can make a monitor speaker (bookshelf model) sound fantastic. The influence of the amplifier is often underestimated. A monitor won’t sound like a floorstanding speaker… but you can extract an enormous sense of grandeur from it. It’s not just the size that makes audiophiles choose a monitor; the timing of a two-way system also ensures that there are hordes of enthusiasts who wouldn’t even consider a three-way floorstanding speaker. It’s a matter of taste! So please stop by for a comparison.

Reviews & awards | Monitor Audio Studio 89

What Hi-Fi?

– The Studio 89 offers a “pristine presentation” with sound that comes across as exceptionally seamless and robust, featuring a top-notch finish on the cabinet. The sound is described as clear, agile, and polished; the speakers are “compact” but do require space to perform at their best, especially in terms of bass.

AVForums (Ed Selley)

– The speakers are praised as one of the most successful models in this price range when paired with the right electronics. The downside is their low sensitivity and the cost of the special stands.

TechRadar

– The Studio 89 combines a retro look with modern technology, delivering an open and balanced sound. The speaker manages to offer detail and dynamics in equal measure, though some users may prefer a more aggressive sound. Its luxurious finish also receives praise.

Sound & Vision (Daniel Kumin)

– Surprisingly deep bass for a compact speaker, wide dynamic range, and reference-level tonality and imaging; though the rear-mounted connectors and the lack of a grille are drawbacks.

Hi-Fi News

– According to laboratory measurements, the sensitivity of 86 dB is accurate, but the minimum impedance is around 4.4 Ω, which requires amplifiers with good current delivery. The bass extension measured at –6 dB is around 57 Hz; it can be extended slightly lower by placing the speakers near the back wall.

Darko.Audio (John Darko)

– With the exception of the high-gloss black finish, everything else gets high praise; the sound is polished and lively, and the control over rhythm and structure is excellent. Compared to the KEF R3 Meta, the Studio 89 performs better with busy, complex recordings.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
