Brand history
Quad was founded in 1936 by Peter Walker in England. The company introduced its first loudspeaker, the “Corner Ribbon,” in 1949. This loudspeaker used a ribbon technology to produce high frequencies, which provided clear reproduction of treble. In the 1950s, Quad introduced the Electrostatic Loudspeaker (ESL), which was a milestone in the development of loudspeaker technology. The ESL was known for its full-range electrostatic technology, which provided unprecedented natural sound.

Quad has since released several models and series, including the Z Series. This model uses a specially designed sandwich construction in the ribbon tweeters for higher sensitivity and accuracy. The brand continues to develop its products while staying true to Peter Walker’s original philosophy of staying as close to the original sound as possible.

Reviews & awards | Quad 66 PRE

Hi-Fi Choice (Nov. 1993)

: This summary covers the combined review of the Quad 66 preamp and the Quad 606 power amp; the sound quality is described as typically “Quad-like”: refined, smooth, and undemanding in terms of balance; genres such as pop and jazz sound confident, but lack “bite” or excitement. Classical music loses some of its dynamics and transparency, resulting in a predictable and safe sound that lacks color. Technical performance is mixed: very low distortion and excellent channel balance, but a limited main level at the disc input and a weak 1.7 V pre-output.

Ters Audio (Review “Quad 66 and Quad 606 review”)

: This confirms Hi-Fi Choice’s assessment; the combination never comes across as legendary, but it is reliable. The sound is described as “soft and forgiving,” with less pronounced expression in vocals, strings, and percussion. Quad’s after-sales service and reliability have been highly praised.

Hi-Fi News & Record Review (Dec 1993)

: The Quad 66 preamplifier proved to be only slightly “intrusive” when compared to passive reference units; transparency and stereo imaging are described as respectable. The 606 amplifier, on the other hand, lacked some clarity in the treble due to high-frequency distortion; its response to interconnects and power load is also critical.

OpusKlassiek (Dutch review)

: The Quad 66 preamp is praised for its extensive tone control—featuring tilt control, filter settings, and bass step. These controls do not distort the musical foundation, offering flexibility without compromising musical balance; vocals are reproduced clearly, and the low end remains deep without excessive amplification. Ease of installation in recording facilities and user-friendliness are cited as advantages, as is the quality of the hardware.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
