Description

Description: Freakuence!
Max Mini—a contradictory name, but they’re certainly feisty. The texture of voices right in the middle of your room. The highs don’t squeak sharply; they flutter solidly, and the midrange carries you along. A speaker you’ll love to sit in front of, one with plenty to discover. Both warm and immersive, yet punchy when it’s called for—like with electronic music.
General description
The Unison Research Max Mini is a two-way hi-fi monitor speaker made in Italy, part of Unison Research’s MAX line. The Unison Research Max Mini combines a bass-reflex enclosure with an 8-inch woofer and a compression driver for the high frequencies, featuring front-firing reflex ports and a crossover set around 1–1.5 kHz. Together, these components deliver rich bass response, clear midrange, and detailed high frequencies, with a sensitivity of about 93 dB and an impedance of around 8 ohms (with peaks of ±6 ohms), which means the Max Mini is also compatible with tube amplifiers.
With the Unison Research Max Mini, you can create a stereo image that’s solid and well-defined, without sacrificing finesse or detail. The Max Mini’s dynamics give both soft passages and powerful peaks room to breathe, with high-frequency resolution that reveals all the nuances hidden in complex recordings. Thanks to its cabinet design and front-firing ports, placement in the listening room is relatively flexible, which helps maintain a balanced and spacious soundstage.
If you’d like to compare the Unison Research Max Mini with other monitor speakers or hear how this bookshelf speaker performs in a real listening environment, please schedule a listening session. We can also discuss trade-in options so you can experience the Max Mini in your own setup—just let us know what you’d like to do!

Brand History
Unison Research was founded in 1987 in Treviso, Italy, by founder Giovanni Maria Sacchetti. Sacchetti studied electrical engineering and classical piano. His technical and musical background formed the basis for his design philosophy. The first production unit was located in a small workshop in the Veneto region. In 1990 the first product was introduced: the Triode 20, followed by models such as Simply Two and Triode 25. A characteristic feature was the use of tube technology, especially EL34 and KT88 tubes. Starting in 1993, Unison Research also developed hybrid systems combining tubes with transistors. All products are completely designed and hand-assembled in Italy. In 2008, the company introduced the Unico series, featuring both integrated amplifiers and separate components. Production takes place in its own workshop in Italy, using only European-made components such as transformers and wooden enclosures.

Questions & Answers

What does a sensitivity of 93 dB mean for the Max Mini?

The Max Mini has a sensitivity of 93 dB at 2.83 Vrms at 1 meter, which means it plays quite loudly even with relatively low power, making it suitable for amplifiers starting at around 10 watts.

What does a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 6 ohms) mean?

A nominal impedance of 8 ohms indicates the average load on the amplifier; the minimum of 6 ohms means that the impedance may drop slightly under certain loads, so a robust amplifier is recommended.

How low does the bass extend on the Max Mini?

The frequency response ranges from approximately 40 Hz to 20,000 Hz, which means the bass is quite solid for a bookshelf model, but it doesn’t reach the very lowest frequencies produced by a subwoofer.

Are the speakers compatible with tube amplifiers?

Yes, the Max Mini has been specifically optimized for tube amplifiers in terms of impedance curve and sensitivity, so they work well with tube amps.

What kind of connections do the Max Mini speakers have?

There’s a speaker terminal on the back that accepts 4 mm banana plugs, forks, or stripped cables, so the connection is flexible and standard.

Is there a switch to change the tone (e.g., for valve/SS)?

There is indeed a switch on the back that allows you to adjust the sound between modes such as Valve, Solid-State, and with or without attenuated treble control.

How many watts RMS can the Max Mini handle without distortion?

The speakers are rated for 100 watts RMS; although they can get quite loud internally, playing at high volumes above that level requires an amplifier with sufficient headroom.

What are the dimensions, and what does that mean for placement?

Each cabinet is 49.5 cm high, 28.5 cm wide, and 36 cm deep, with front-firing bass reflex ports; that depth requires sufficient space, but the front ports offer some flexibility in placement.

What finishes are available?

The finish options are high-gloss Cherry, Walnut, and Mahogany, all lacquered; some of the cabinetry features veneer.

How does the crossover work, and what filters are used?

The crossover uses 12 dB/octave filters for both the woofer (low-pass) and the tweeter (high-pass), with a crossover frequency between 1,000 and 1,500 Hz, ensuring smooth integration of both drivers.

You can make a monitor speaker (bookshelf model) sound fantastic. The influence of the amplifier is often underestimated. A monitor won’t sound like a floorstanding speaker… but you can extract an enormous sense of grandeur from it. It’s not just the size that makes audiophiles choose a monitor; the timing of a two-way system also ensures that there are hordes of enthusiasts who wouldn’t even consider a three-way floorstanding speaker. It’s a matter of taste! So please stop by for a comparison.

Reviews & awards | Unison Research Max Mini

7Review – More Than Mini (Noel Keywood, May 12, 2020):

In this review, the Max Mini speakers are praised for their high sensitivity—91.5 dB/1W/1m—which allows them to produce considerable volume even with low power. The sound is described as fast, with a prominent midrange and clear highs thanks to the titanium horn tweeter, though it is acknowledged that the sound can initially come across as somewhat harsh, especially in large listening rooms. Bass response below 150 Hz is present but lacks deep undertones; the speakers perform best in medium-sized or smaller rooms.

LP Magazine – Review (Holger Barske, LP 6/2019):

The Max Mini is considered one of the best compact speakers on the market for those looking to pair them with tube amplifiers: powerful sound, precision in the reproduction of drums and guitar, and a controlled sound even at high volumes. The reviewer also notes that the bass response improves when the speakers are placed closer to the back wall.

Stereo i Kolorowo (Poland, listening test report):

This review describes the Max Mini’s soundstage as very colorful, full, and organic, with high dynamics. The bass is “spectacular” given the size, and the sound is energetic and fluid. According to this review, the speakers are well-suited for listeners who want to hear detail; at the same time, there is a slight warmth to the sound character.

CD

The Compact Disc (CD), like most inventions, did not appear out of thin air. After the invention of the laser in 1958, the first patent for optically readable disks was filed in 1961. The first digital video records were introduced in 1972. After a flop by Philips, the manufacturer, together with Sony, released the first CD in 1979. We do not know what it contained, but in 1982 the first CD was released for the market, it was the album Visitors by ABBA. In this year the first player became available and so began the elimination of the LP from the market. Many have literally thrown their LPs in the trash… we still see some visitors being disappointed when they tell us this. Velen hebben hun lp’s letterlijk bij het vuil gezet… sommige bezoekers zien wij nog steeds balen als ze dit vertellen.
